Schools (Local education authority)
The three local primary schools provide good modern facilities in this growing town.
Parents are recommended to seek early advice regarding availability of places.
There are plans to build a further primary school in the Ham district to relieve the pressure on intake.
Gillingham School began life in 1516 when known as the Free School and which later became the grammar School in 1876.
Comprehensive education has been provided since 1959.
The town is well provided for those parents who wish to opt out of the LEA and seek independent education for their children.
The most well known preparatory school locally is Port Regis where the Princess Royal's children were educated. The town also has
school bus links to Bruton School for Girls, Hazelgrove and King's Bruton for day pupils.
